Planning an Island That Actually Works

An island earns its place through clearances, not size. The working aisle between island and perimeter should be at least 42 inches — 48 where two cooks pass — and seating requires roughly 24 inches of width per person with 15 inches of knee overhang. If the room cannot give an island those numbers plus a meaningful work surface, a peninsula or a widened run is usually the better design, and an honest designer will say so.

The next decisions are functional. A cooktop island needs ventilation — a ceiling-integrated extractor or downdraft system — and dedicated power; a sink island needs supply and drainage planned before flooring. Single-level islands read as one architectural volume and suit gres or stone waterfall ends; split-level islands separate prep from dining but visually divide the piece. Binova's island compositions treat the volume as furniture: storage on every face, panel-matched sides, and tops in porcelain gres that shrug off heat and knives.

Several of the seven full-scale kitchens in our Short Hills showroom are built around islands of different scales — the fastest way to know what 42 versus 48 inches of clearance actually feels like is to stand in it.
